High Temperature Materials 21 Project

National Research Institute for Metals
Japan

1. Outline of the HTM 21 Project

(1) Aim of the project

On June 1, 1999, NRIM launched an R&D project, "High Temperature Materials 21 (HTM 21)" Project, the Phase 1 (1999.6-2004.3). The budget for the FY1999 is 314,000,000 Yen. In this Project we develop high temperature materials for advanced power engineering systems, including ultra-high efficiency gas turbines for power generations, advanced jet engines, high performance space rockets and so on.

(2) Research topics

Guided by knowledge to be obtained through materials design and experimental analysis researches, we develop Ni-base superalloys, ceramics(Si3N4), and refractory superalloys, which are the main three materials to start with in this Project. To enhance practical use of the new materials, we develop a virtual gas turbine in a computer to evaluate the materials performance before actual tests in gas turbines.

(3) Target of the project

We have clear targets for developments of the three kinds of materials. The temperature capability under 137MPa for 1000h creep rupture is to be 1100C for Ni-base superalloys, 1500C for ceramics, and 1800C for refractory superalloys.

2.Ways for participation

(1) Collaboration

We call for collaborations based on fifty-fifty contributions and co-ownership of the results. Private companies, research organisations, universities and so on in all over the world are very welcome to apply. It is recommended to send researcher to NRIM(or in National Institute for Research in Inorganic Materials or National Aerospace Laboratory depending on the research topics) to promote collaborations. In this case we may be able to support the people to come and stay.

(2) Joining individually in the Project

Those who wish to join the Project are very welcome to apply individually apart from the collaboration mentioned above. We have some budget to employ such people as visiting researchers who will work mainly at NRIM, or possibly at NIRIM or NAL again depending on research topics.

3.Conditions for applications

(1)Collaboration

Private companies, research institutes, universities and such organisations which have excellent research and development abilities, in any countries, are welcome to apply. The way of collaboration is based on a fifty-fifty contribution with expecting co-ownership of the results such as publications, patents, etc. The agreement will be made on a form based on the NRIM normal form of agreement. In case that researcher is sent to NRIM as a part of collaboration, an agreement of employment will be made within the collaboration agreement or separately.

(2)Joining as a researcher in the Project

Those who have excellent experiences and abilities with high temperature materials and their related research fields are welcome to apply with their proposals of possible researches they could perform in the Project. PhD degree is not necessarily needed. The conditions of the employment is to be discussed in case by case but typically, for those who have PhD degrees, 270,000 Yen/month maybe paid excluding house rent.

4.Selections

The candidates will be selected by the Project Director (H.Harada) on his responsibility. The process of the selection will not be open, but made along the followings.

  1. The quality of the application, especially the merits for the Project in terms of either fundamental or practical part of the Project.
  2. Experience and abilities in research and development in this field.
  3. Possession of facilities and equipments needed for the research (in case of collaboration, not for the individual joining in the Project).
  4. Research fund to realise a fifty-fifty matching. (in case of collaboration, not for the individual joining in the Project).

5.Applications

Use Form 1-1 for collaboration, or Form 1-2 for joining the Project. The applications should return to Dr Hiroshi Harada, not later than 30 June. Applications can be sent by E-mail, Fax, or airmail. The selection of candidates will be made on 1 July.
